Mr. J. G. Miller Vice President P. O. Box 542 Reading, Pennsylvania 19603 Gentlemen:
In our 4.eal.lauing review of your application to operate the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1, we find that additional information is needed to complete our evaluation. The information required is described in the enclosure.
In order to maintain our licensing review schedule we will need a q
completely adequate response by September 12, 1972. Please info m us within 7 days af ter receipt of this letter of your confirmation of the schedule or the date you will be able to meet. If you cannot meet c.sr specified date or if your reply is not fully responsive to our requests it is highly likely that the overall schedule for completing the licensing review for this project will have to be extended. Since reassignment of the staff's efforts will require completion of the new assignment prior to returning to this project, the extent of extension will most likely be greater than the extent of delay in your response.
Sincerely, OriginalSignedBt R. b bekk, dsistant Director for Pressurized Water Reactors Directorate of Licensing

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THREE MILE ISLAND UNIT 1 DOCKET No. 50-289 2.0 SITE 2.3 As discussed in your "En' ronmental Report - Operating License Stage" on page 2.5-2, a pumped storage facility is planned for construction on Stony Creek, upstream of the Three Mile Island site.
Describe this ' project in your FSAR for the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1, and provide the following additional information to allow for an independent safety review:
a.
Provide sufficient information to assure that the proposed pumped storage plant can adequately pass its local probable maximum flocd and the basin probable maximum flood. Alte rnatively demonstrate that the effects of the failure of the facility during such floods will not adversely affect the Three >11e Island site.
b.
Provide cssurances that the proposed facility can adequately sustain its local safe shutdown earthquake.
In the event that such a conclusion can be furnished, postulate the arbitrary seismically induced failure of the structure and demonstrate analytically that the resulting flood wave will not adversely affect the Three Ydle Island site.
c.
In the event that the situations described in a. and b. above cannot be satisfied, that is that it cannot be shown that the Three Mlle Island site can safely withstand the ef fects caused by the inability of the proposed Stony Creek pumped storage facility to withstand the same level of natural c
phenomena severity suggested for nuclear power plants, describe how you intend to provide adequate flood protection for the Three Mile Island site for such conditions.
