PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION September 20, 1979 PRELIMINARYNOTIFICATIONOFEVENTORUNUSUALbCCURRENCE--PNO-79-427A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
PRELIMINARY INDICATION OF A CRACK IN TIIE FEEDWATER TO STEAM GENERATOR N0ZZLE This updates PNO-79-427 issued on September 18, 1979.
Review of the pipe-to-transition piece weld radiographs on the main feedwater lines by a level III radiographar and by an NRC NDT specialist verified that cracking exists at these welds in both the A and B steam generator feedwater lines.
Radiography and ultrasonic examinations cf the remaining portions of these feedwater lines, as required by IE Bulletin 79-13, are in progress.
The Region III inspector is onsite and t:i' review the results of these examinations and will also review the licensee L procedures.
..r The State of Michigan is being kept informed. A press release will be issued by the licensee or by Region III (Chicago).
Region III was notified initially of this condition on September 17, 1979, by the site resident inspector.
This information was updated September 19, 1979, by the NRC construction inspector and is current as of 8:00 a.m. on September 20, 1979.
