PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-428 h
This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
TURBINE-REACTOR TRIP The unit experienced a turbine-reactor trip at 12:43 p.m. on September 18, 1979.
While performing a periodic test on the EHC hy.iraulic pumps, a pressure surge resulting from a transfer from one pump to the other caused a turbine trip.
The new anticipatory turbine trip-reactor trip circuitry performed as designed, tripping the reactor.
Initial review indicated all safety systems performed as desigried.
During the transient following the reactor trip pressurizer level indication went below the minimum indicatior. level for approximately 48 sec.
Minimum RCS pressure was approximately 1700 psig.
The resident inspector is continuing his review of the reactor trip.
The licensee is presently returning to power operations.
The licensee has made a press release.
RIII does not plan to make a release.
The State of Ohio has been notified.
RIII received initial notification of the trip from the Resident Inspector on September 18, 1979 at approximately 1:30 p.m. with detailed followup at 3:00 p.m.
