SUMMARY
OT MEETING WITH EXXON TO DISCUSS THEIR ROLE.
IN TRI-2 RELATED REEVAL11ATION3 0F OPERATING PLANTS yy On HaJ 21,1979, representatives of Exxon met with members of the NRC "4
~
staff. The primary purpose of this meeting was to discuss the role that
.?
Exxon would play in the staff's current program for evaluating (TRI-2).
all operating plants relative to the accident at Three Mile Island - Unit 2 7,
A list of attandees is providad as Enclosure A to this suczsary. The tajor points discussed at the meeting are suusrized below.
1.
Exxon's Rolo
~ ~
~
D. Ross-sumarized the staff's need to initiate a dialogue with Exxon on the staff's evaluation of operating plants, in light of the TMI-2 accident.
He noted that Exxon is a fuel supplier and that Exxon '!ael is currently in a nu::bar of opersting reactors. He also pointed out that Exxon (as T'
opposed to the NS$$ vendor) was doing the safety analyses for some of those utilities. The staff does not know what roles these three parties will play in the reevaluatica program for operating plaats having Exxon fuel. He noted that it is 1sportant to define these roles, in light of our review procedure. Thesefern we have asked PV2 utilities to reevaluate transients and small breaks. prepare revised procedural guidance, and train operating personnel in the use of this new guidance. In the case of the BW plants, this involved simulator training on the 82 simulator. The Exxon representatives pointed out that they have (or soon will have) fuel in those plants listed in Enclosure B to this sumary. To date, these utilities have not requested Exxon's assistance in responding to any of the staff's inquiries relative to THI-2. They also said that Exxon does not do the safety analyses for all of those plants, noting that Maine
,,/"
Yankee, and Yankaa Rowe plants were two exceptions. Further, they pointed out that Exxon has no simulator capability.
A The staff and Exhon agreed that it was important to get the respective roles of the MSSS vendor and the fuel supplier clarified for purposes of this reevaluation program.
D. Ross noted that we planned to send letters Q
to each of the owners of operating plants to request that clarification.
os He also pointed out that meetings will be held next week with the owners k.,
