SUBJECT:

BRIEFING BY THE STAFF ON H OCONEE ORDER, 9:50 A.M., FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1979, COMMISSIONE3S' CONFERENCE ROOM, D.C. OFFICE (OPEN TO PUBLIC AlTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by the Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, on the proposed authorization to resume ope ation of the Oconee Nuclear Station, Units Nos.1, 2 & 3 (In the Matter of Duke Power Company, Dockets Nos. 50-269, 50-270 and 50-287).

The Commission, by a vote of 5-0, approved the proposed authorization which would permit continued operation of Oconee Unit No. I and the restarting of Unit No. 2 when a sufficient number of operators who have completed TMI-2 simulator training are available.

In additien, Oconee Unit No. 3 would be allowed to resume operation upon completion of refueling, and subsequent availability of TMI-trained operators.

In taking this action, the Commission requested that:

1.

a letter be dispatched to the Vice President (Steam Production),

Duke Power Company, informing him of this decision.

(Subsequently, the letter was dispatcP.ed on May 18, 1979).

2.

a Notice of Authorization to Resume Oieraticn be published in the Federal Register.

(Subsequently, the Notice was signed and forwarded to the Federal Recister on May 18,19'9).
