July 18, 1979 Docket No. 50-29 Yankee Atomic Electric Company ATTN:

Mr. Rooert H. Groce Licensing Engineer 20 Turnpike Road Westborough, Massachusetts 01581 Gentlemen:

Since the Three Mile Island incident, the NRC Comissioners, the public and the media have expressed an ine.reased interest in the status of operating nuclear power plants and fuel facilities.

This interest has now reached a level where it is desirable to know, en a daily basis, the status of nuclear facilities with an operating license.

We request your cooperation in obtaining this. information.

We plan to contact each operating facility on the dedicated phone durir.g the last half of the 12:00 midnight to 8:00 a.m. shift each day.

This call will also be used as the check of the dedicated telephone line.

The amount of time required should not exceed one or two minutes for any facility since we will only be asking for the operating status of each plant.

If a unit is not fully operational, we would like to have a very brief description of the reason for this.

During prolonged outages, we will not make these status calls.

Implemen-tation of this program will start Monday, July 23, 1979.

Please notify your responsible plant personne'. of this program.

If you have any questions please call the Regional Office.

Sincerely, i

n Boyce H. Grier
