Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Under the provisions of the operating license Technical Specifications and/or 10CFR21, NRC Region II was notified on April 20, 1979 that a potential significant deficiency or substantial safety hazard existed at North Anna Power Station, Unit No. 1.

In accordance with the reporting requirements of the above regulations, the following information is submitted:

C. Name of firm supplying the component, activity or service:

Stone & Webster, Boston, Massachusetts D. Description of defect, deficiency, or failure to comply:

Following a review by Stone & Webster of the North Anna Unit 2 Main Steam Valve House piping Stress Analysis, it was determined that improper input criteria were used for the building dis placement on Unit 1. North Anna Power Station personnel were immediately informed of this situation and the affected piping.

Four supports on the Safety Injection System piping were involved:

two supports were on the Train A Suction header of the high head safety injection pumps and two supports were on the high head safety injection supply header from the RWST. These supports do not meet the stress requirements posed by a seismic event and require modification.

E. Date of determination of reportability: April 24, 1979.

The correct criteria on Main Steam Valve House displace =ent were used and modification of the affected supports has been initiated.
