NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No. 50-266 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1 Date July 5, 1979 Completed By Wisconsin Electric Power Company Unit 1 was base loaded for approximately 90% of the period with three load reductions. Power Supply requested that load be reduced to an average of 460 MWe for 60 hours6.944444e-4 days
0.0167 hours
9.920635e-5 weeks
2.283e-5 months
starting June 4, 1979. This load reduction was necessary for system stability while maintenance was being performed on a switchyard circuit breaker.

Load was reduced to an average of 300 MWe for an average duration of eight hours on two occasions to permit locating and plugging leaking condenser tubes.

Anchor bolt testing in accordance with IE Bulletin No.

79-02 is progressing. No general conclusions have been reached.

Unit 1 will be shut down as early as practical to accomplish the feedwater nozzle examination in accordance with IE Bulletin No. 79-13. Shutdown of this unit is dependent upon the results of the examination of the Unit 2 feedwater nozzles, completion of any repairs to Unit 2, and Power Supply requirements. If time permits, steam generator tubes may be inspected in an attempt to locate and plug the source of an approximate 12 gsllon per day primary-to-secondary leak.

A review of plant safeguards actuation circuitry dis-closed deficiencies requiring corrective modifications.

The deficiencies are in the areas of single component failure, manual actuation, and bypass indication criteria and involve engineered safeguards systems actuation circuitry. These deficiencies are minor in nature and are related to reset circuitry design deemed acceptable during plant construction in each case. Modifications to correct the deficiencies.

will be performed as soon as practicable.

Further details of this item are discussed in Licensee Event Report No. 79-010/0lT-0.

No other major safety related maintenance was performed during the period.

NARRATIVE SU:01ARY OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No. 50-301 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 2 Date July 5, 1979 Completed By Wisconsin Electric Power Company Unit 2 was base loaded for approximately 90% of the period with 11 load reductions and one shutdown. Power Supply requested on 10 occasions that load be reduced to an average of 375 MWe for an average duration of four hours.

Load was reduced to 70 MWe for seven hours on June 27, 1979, to investigate a problem with temperature control of the reactor coolant drain tank. The source of hot water causing the heating problem was packing leakage of a residual heat removal isolation valve. Repair will be completed during the Unit 2 shutdown.

Shutdown to accompli-h feedwater nozzle volumetric examinations in accordance with IE Bulletin No. 79-13 was started on June 29, 1979. The unit was taken off line at 2:40 a.m., June 30, 1979. Required repairs will be accomp.lished prior to putting the unit back on line. Other minor maintenance will also be conducted during this shutdown.

No other major safety related maintenance was performed during the period.
