  • N. 50-338 J W 0 1 1979 Mr. W. L. Proffitt Senior Vice President - Power Operations Virginia Electric & Power Company P. O. Box 26666 Richmond, Virginia 23261

Dear Mr. Proffitt:

SUBJECT:

REGUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - I.iSTRUMENTATION QUAL!FICATION (NORTH ANNA POWER STATION, UNIT NO.1)

We have completed our review of i m Westinghouse Electric Corporation's report entitled, " Qualification Testing cf Barton Pressure and Differential Pressure Transmitters" (Proprietary) wilich addresses the Barton transmitters used in your application and find that additional information is required.

The results of the qualification tests, as delineated in the above cited report, show that tbc Barton transmitters, with the exception of the Barton 763 narrow range p.c Sure transmitter, met specifications for the nitiation of the p.otection system actions.

However, they did not meet specified accuracies for manual control during post-accident cooling. Therefore, we require that you specify the schedule for cubmittal of additional justificati.

to demcnstrate that these transmitters will meet all of their performance requirements including functions needed during a hypothesized post-accident couling period.

In the interim we require that you describe (1) the alternate qualified instrtrents and procedures for manually controlling reactor conditions during long-term post-accident cooling, and (2) the bases for acceptability of the reasured error in the Barton 763 narrow range pressure transaitter for initiating short term protection system actions. Moreover, if the calculated containment environment temperatures exceed those values specified for sequential tests, we require that you show that the protective enclosures around transmitters would prevent transmitter temperatures from exceeding values measured in the tests.

Please provide a schedule within 7 days for the submittal of this informaticr..

Sincerely, O
