Dear Mr. Proffitt:

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITl%?,c INFORMATION - INSTRUMENTATION QUALIFICATION (NORTH ANNA POWEP S, ATION, UNIT NO. 2)

We have completed our re,it.w of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation's report entitled, " Qualification Testing of Barten Pressure and Differential Pressure Transmitters" (Proprietary) which addrasses the Barton transmitters used in your application and find that additional information is required.

The results of the qualification tests, as delineated in the above cited report, now that the Barton transmitter, with the exception of the Ba-ton 763 narrow range pressure transmitter, met specifications for the initiation of the protecticr.

system actions. However, they did not meet specifieo accuracies for manual control during post-accident cooling. Therefore, we require that you specify the schedule for submittal of additional justification to demorstrate that these transmitters will meet all of their performance requirements including functions needed during a hypothesized post-accident cooling period.

In the interim we require that you describe prior to licensing (1) the alternate qualified instruments and procedures for manually controlling reactor conditions during long-term post-accident cooling, and (2) the bases for acceptability of t'ie measured error in the Barton 763 carrow range pressure transmitter for initiating short term protection system actions. Moreover, if the calculated containment environment temperatures exceed those values specified for sequential tests, we require that you show that the protective enclosures around transmitters would prevent transmitter temperatures from exceeding values measured in the tests.

Please provide a schedule within 14 days for the submittal of this infcrmation.

Sincerely,

. Pa'rr ief Light Water Reactors Branch tb. 3 Division of Project Management cc: See next page 7 9 0 7110 6 Col sn-o r'
