This is in response to your request to the U. S. Department of Energy for informatoon on the transportation of radioactive r:aterials through western Montana and particularly through tho fitssoula area. The

Department of Energy forwarded your letter to this agency for reply.
In 1975, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories conducted a survey for the Nuclear P,egulatory Cornission to detemino the type and amount of radioactive material being transported throughout the country.
I am enclosing computer printouts, extracted from that survey, to show the

shipments that passed through the Missoula arca (Encl. 0) and through the llelena area (Encl. 3: ).

The sheet for Missoula shows that, in 1975, passenger aircraft trans-ported 52 packages containing lodino-131, totaling 80 millicuries, and r
156 packages containing colybdonum-99, totaling 88 curies. The total at the bottom of page 5 of enclosure 3 shows that 10,310 packages, con-

teining various radionuclides, were transported through Helena.

Since the incident at Three Mile Island, I've had quite a few questions reganiing transportation of nuclear materials through western Montana.
Would you please let me know what types of nuclear materials are being shipped through western Montana and expecially what is being transported through the Missoula area by highway, rail and' air.
