.N E 536-4000 AREA CODE 402 July 18, 1979 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN:

Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 4 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555

Reference:

Docket No. 50-285 Gentlemen:

With a letter dated July 11, 1979, the Omaha Public Power District provided a design description of switch gear room separation modifications to be installed at the Fort Calhoun Station. These modifications are intended to provide a three-hour fire-rated barrier to separate the two divisions of switchgear in the room.

This letter is to advise the Commission thi the District no longer intends to electrically supervise and alarm the roll-up do issociated with the fire barrier, but rather will maintain the doors loc

.d closed wnen not in use.

This method of fire door supervision is deemed accept-able in Section D.1.j of Appendix A to BTP 9.5-1.nd by Sections 3.1.9 and 4.9.1 of the Fort Calhoun fire protection Safety Evaluation Report.

Since the roll-up doors will rarely be opened, +ne proposed method of surervision does not decrease the level of safety.

Safety is, in fact, enhanced by eliminating unnecessary wiring, thus reducing fire load:ng in the area.

Sincerely,

.s l'. w i

,,T. E. Short
