Catawba Nuclear Station ,5 Docket Nos.: 50-413, 50-414 IE Bulletin: 78-12, 12A, 12B c. -3 Duke File: CN-1412.ll em

Reference:

Mr. A. E. Scherer's letter to Mr. Harold D. Thornburg, Directer Division of Reactor Construction Inspection, dated April 25, 1979

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Our NSSS Vendor, Westinghouse, has advised us of a schedule on which Duke Power Company could supply the information requested by IE Bulletin 78-12 (as modified by Supplement 12A and 2B). One vessel at the Catawba Nuclear Station was manufactured by Combustion Engineering, Inc., while the other was manufactured by Rotterdam Dockyard Company.

Combustion Engineering, Inc. plans to submit a generic report directly to the NRC, including code and nestinghouse acceptance criteria before June 8,1979.

We will then reference the generic report in our final response to the bulletin which should be transmitted to you on or before June 29, 1979. This schedule is consistent with the referenced comunication between Combustion Engineering and the NRC.

The schedule for submittal of the Rotterdam information is more uncertain.

Westinghouse hopes to submit their generic report in July,1979. Duke Power would then submit the plant specific report by the end of September,1979.

The reasons for this rather lengthly delay are as follow:

1. All Catawba records are in storage at Rotterdam.
2. All reports are in Dutch and must be translated.

272 19~3

3. Rotterdam reports a manpower shortage.

Duke Power will keep you advised of any new information as it becomes available.

Very trul.y yours, n
