NRC MILK S AMPLING PROGRAM e
The NEC milk sampling program was initiated to provide the NRC staff with information relative to the current levels of radioiodine in milk on a prompt basis, such that plant activities / operations could be modified or expedited, if need be, to assure that the I-131 in milk remained at acceptable levels.
The NRC onsite priority for information was geared toward the rapid screening of environmental samples for unusual radioactivity levels, rather than the more deliberate, less timely, in-laboratory measurements.
j NRC milk samples were obtained from milk samples split by Met Ed on alternate days from four or five of the Met Ed routine milk sampling locations and from additional samples collected from time to time as deemed appropriate.
'Ihese samples were analy::ed using field techniques at the NRC Mobile Laboratory at the TMI site; providing "same day" results. Table I provfies the specifics regarding the milk sampling locations.
Analytical Procedure _:
Ten (10) milligrams of iodide carrier were added to a four liter aliquot of raw, unpreservea uf.1k.
The sample was then passed through a 40 cm> Dowex 1x8 (25-50 mesh) anion exchange column.
The colu=n was cinsed with water and counted in a fixed geometry for 50 minutes on a 3"x3" NaI (T1) detector or for 60 minutes on a Ge(Li) detector. Typical detection limits were 10 to 15 pCi 1-131/11ter milk, dependent on current background rates and count times.
The analytical results are tabulated in Table 3.
Quality Assurance:
The quality assurance program included the use of counts on simulated I-131 standards and background measurements with each set of data; comparison of the results with the licensee's data on split samples; intra-comparison of measurements of " positive" results betucen the NaI and Ge(Li) detection systems; and the participation in the counting of the EPA " spiked" sample crosschecks. The NRC results for the EPA cross checks samples are tabulated in Table 2.
Farminst Practices :
Cattle from the locations from which milk was sampled were on stored feed until May 5, 1979.
Beginning on April 28 cattle from 7B3 were on pasture.
Cattle from 14D1 and 2G1 were placed en pasture between May 5 and May 7.
Farm 431 cows are maintained on stored feed until May 15, 1979. Water supplies were from wells. During the pasture grazing season, the cattle also have access to streams and pond water.
Coats at farm 1B1 were allowed to graze throughout the interval of the TMI incident although stored feed supplement was provided.

Milk Use:
With the exceptien of the milk from f arm 4B1, the milk was used' in processed food.
Milk from 4B1 was variously used, including fresh sales and for processed milk products.
Goat milk, when available, is sold for fresh use or cheese products.
