Revision 1 11/30/78 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE 1764 OPERATION AND CALIBRATION OF THE SAM-2 ANALYZER 1.0 PURPOSE describe the check-out, operation, 1.1 The purpose of this procedure is t s
and calibration of the SAM-2/RD-19 detector system.
2.
DISCUSSION 2.1 The SAM-2/RD-19 is a portable dual single channel analyzer utilitzing a 2" x 1/2" NaI crystal surrounded by a 3/16" fixed lead collar for background reduction.
2.2 The Units operate from either 110 AC or Battery pack (rechargeable).
The high voltage power supply develops high voltage for the detector.
Pulses caused by external gamma radiation are preamplified, applied to the stabilizer circuit, and to an adjustable gain amplifier.
From the amplifier, the pulses are coupled to the pulse height discriminators and registered by the scaler and ratemeter.

The instrument's amplifier-discriminator is initially adjusted for the 364 kev photopeak of I-131, therefor 2, during normal operation, the discriminato, settings should not be re-adjusted.
5.2 The SAM-2/RD-19 may be used with its rechargeable battery pack or v th the preferred PV-1000 FC powerverter (DC-AC Converter).
The battery pack simply connects to the back panel.
For AC power the PV-1000 FC is connected to an automobile battery and the 12V DC is converted to 110 AC.
5.3 Set the main circuit breaker switch and the selector switch to "on" (Red neon pilot light indicates proper operational set-up).
5.4 Connect the Radeco High Volume Air Sampler (with a charcoal cartridge) to the Powerverter.
5.5 Set selector switch to " variable" and adjust flow to indicate 5 3

air.
If 5 ft / min cannot be obtained, adjust flow as high as lb9 29f7 2.0

possible and sample long enough to yield 15 ft.
Record sample time and contact the E.C.S. for location outside plume for sample counting.
5.6 Check SAM-2 control circuitry as follows:
5.6.1 HV adjust to "7.50" 5.6.2 Ratemeter switch to "Ch 1" 5.6.3 Scaler display switch to "on" with count mode to "5",
"X1",

Wait about 5 minutes for full stabilization.
5.6.6 Power switch to "on" and stabilizer to "on" Wait about 5 minutes for full stabilization.
5.6.6 Connect the detector to the front panel and expose with the Ba-133 cartridge check source.
The ratemeter should read within the range indicated on the cabibration sticker.
(If not, recheck control circuitry and calculate an efficiency if necessary).
5.6.7 Count the sample cartridge for 5 niinutes and then count the background for 2 minutes.
Calculate the net count rate and determine the I-131 Airborne Activity Concentr'ation by:

Revision I 11/30/78 NOTE:
Use efficiency as f - the calibration sticker on the detector system.
Counting should be performed in a low background area if possible.
6.0 CALIBRATION 6.1 Calibration of the SAM-2/RD-19 is necessary only when initializing for specific photopeaks or when the efficiency varies greater than 10% of the original calibration.
Efficiency determination is performed quarterly.
6.2 Check SAM-2 control circuitry as follows:
6.2.1 HV adjust to "7.50".
6.2.2 Ratemeter switch to "Chl".
6.2.3 Scaler displaf switch "on" with count mode to " timed".

6.2.6 Connect the detector assembly and perform a function check of ratemeter, scaler, timer, etc.
6.2.7 Count background for 2 minutes in each channel.
Record the cot ntrate.
6.2.8 letermine the activity of the Ba-133 cartridge, correcting for decay, and count for 5 minutes in each channel.
NOTE:
Change Ratemeter setting to "Ch 2" and reverse 6.2.4c settings when counting in thannel 2.

See 1764-3

6.2.10 With the detector exposed to the Ba-133 cartridge, take a reading on the appropriate scale of the ratemeter.
Calculate the range for this reading using i 20% for each channel.
This ratemeter range will be posted on the instrument and used for operational check-out prior to use.
6.2.11 When the efficiency is within i 10 of the labeled calibrated efficiency, the labeled calibrated efficiency will be used until the next quarterly check.
Readjusting the threshold to 3.44 will center the 364 kev photopeak of I-131 in the window.
6.2.12 When the efficiency is not within i 10% of the labeled calibrated efficiency, the instrument must be internally calibrated as per /.1-7.10. The following cal cation procedure should be performed with a Instrumentation Technician.

1764 Revision 1 11/30/78 7.1.3 HV adjust set to "7.50" 7.1.4 Timer set to " manual" 7.1.5 Ratemeter set to " Channel 1" 7.1.6 Display switched "on" 7.2 Connect RD-19 NaI detector, and tha AC cord (or battery) 7.3 Ensure that the stabilizer switc.. (back panel) is on and flip power switch on (5 minute warm-up) 7.4 With the cover removed find the gain control, R8, and the stabilizer sensitivity adjust, R72, (See Figure 2-2 of SAM-2 Technical Manual).
7.5 Adjust R8, amplifier gain control, to the full clockwise position (See Figure 1764-1).
7.6 Adjust R72, stabilizer sensitivity adjust, to the full counterclockwise position (See Figure 1764-2).
7.7 Expose the detector to the Ba-133 cartridge check source.
7.8 Slowly turn R8 counter-clockwise while watching for a peak reading on the ratemeter; set the gain at the point which provides a maximum reading.
If a peak reading cannot be reached, slowly turn R72 clockwise while watching for a peak reading on the ratemeter.
Continue just past the peak.
Readjust R8 for a maximum ratemeter reading. To verify the peak, take 1 minute counts at 3.36, 3.3 and 3.4 threshold settings.
The SAM-2/RD-19 is internally calibrated with maximum counts detected at the 3.36.
7.9 The detector system is now adjusted for the 356 kev photopeak of Ba-133.
Readjust settings as per 5.6.4 7.10 Determine new efficiency fellowing steps 6.2.7 through 6.2.9.
