Title:
Category 3 Public Meeting to Discuss the Regulatory Basis Associated with the Physical Security for Advanced Reactors Rulemaking Meeting Identifier: 20190749 Date of Meeting: August 8, 2019 Location: U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission One White Flint North, Commissioners Hearing Room 11555 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 Type of Meeting: Category 3 Purpose of the Meeting: The purpose of this meeting was to provide an opportunity for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and external stakeholders to exchange information on the scope and related costs and benefits associated with the proposed rulemaking on the physical security for advanced reactors. Feedback obtained at the meeting will be considered during the development of the proposed rule.
General Details: The meeting was attended by 18 NRC staff and 23 members of the public.
Summary of Presentations: The NRC staff presented a summary of the regulatory basis for the physical security for advanced reactors rulemaking effort. During this discussion, the staff presented the different alternatives considered, the reasoning for the staffs recommendation of rulemaking, and the performance criteria. The staff also included a discussion of the cost and benefits, the rulemaking process, and the timeline for the rulemaking.
Summary of Public Feedback: The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) presented slides showing support of the rulemaking. NuScale provided a comment also showing support of the rule.
Action Items/Next Steps:
The staff will consider public feedback received to inform the development of the proposed rule and associated guidance.
