NRC Approval of proposed scope of work, cost estimate, and cost allocation for groundwater assessment of technetium-99 Date: Wednesday, August 07, 2019 3:19:00 PM Bill Halliburton/Jeff Lux, The NRC staff has reviewed the proposed scope of work, cost estimate, and cost allocation for groundwater assessment of technetium-99 (Tc-99) submitted by letter dated July 31, 2019. This letter was submitted as a follow up to the letter dated May 3, 2019, (ADAMS Accession No. ML19126A052) regarding the potential impact of Tc-99 on influent, waste, and effluent.

The NRC staff approves your proposal to sample and evaluate current gross beta and Tc-99 activity concentrations at the Cimarron site and to conduct a Tc-99 treatability study to assess the ion exchange resin selected for uranium removal to also remove Tc-99 from the influent groundwater. Please keep the NRC and Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality informed about the progress of these activities.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this email.

Thank you, Ken Kalman, Project Manager providing a detailed Tc-99 sampling plan. The Trust needs Tc-99 characterization data in the aquifer to estimating the influent and effluent Tc-99 concentrations associated with the remedial treatment system. The purpose of this Tc-99 sampling plan was to address the lack of adequate groundwater characterization data for Tc-99 in the western alluvium and BA 1 areas. The proposed sampling locations includes those monitoring wells listed in the Radiation Protection Plan and other additional wells. The collected groundwater samples will be analyzed for gross alpha and gross beta activities, and tc-99.

I concur with this sampling plan, and have no other comments.
