SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF JULY 9, 2019, CLOSED MEETING WITH FRAMATOME INC. REGARDING FUEL PERFORMANCE On July 9, 2019, a closed meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Framatome Inc. (Framatome) at the Framatome campus in Lynchburg, VA, to discuss proprietary information regarding Framatome fuel performance and future plans. The meeting was used to increase the NRC staffs understanding of Framatomes fuel activities, fuel operating experience, and advanced codes and methods.

Framatome first gave an update of boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel performance. Framatome detailed key aspects of current BWR fuel product features, provided a status of the overall performance of its BWR designs, provided a status of ATRIUM 11 lead fuel and Z4B lead channel programs, provided an overview of BWR fuel examinations and results of recent surveillances, and provided an overview of anticipated BWR fuel examinations.

Framatome then gave an update on its pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel performance.

Framatome detailed key aspects of current PWR fuel product features, provided a status of the overall performance of its PWR designs, provided a status of the GAIA and AGORA assemblies lead fuel programs, provided an overview of PWR fuel examinations and results of recent surveillances, and provided an overview of anticipated PWR fuel examinations.

Framatome also gave an overview of its PROtect Plan and Advanced Fuel Management (AFM)

Plan. In addition to the topical reports needed for advanced methods associated with the plans, Framatome informed the NRC staff of the topical reports that are needed for extension to advanced products within each plan. The last item of discussion was on a corrosion event and subsequent root cause investigation that occurred at a European nuclear power plant in 2017.
