VinotwrA ELecTurc Axn Powen COMPANY Rrcunown.VanoxxzA 20261 November 7, 1979 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 9 09 Of fice of Nuclear Reactor Regulation P0/ATV:baw Attn: Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief Docket No: 50-333 Light Water Reactors Branch No. 1 Division of Project Management License No: NPF-4 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555

Dear Mr. Denton:

Additional Requested Relief From Inservice Insoection Recuirements North Anna Power Station Unit No. 1 Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a (g), the Virginia Electric and Power Company submitted its program for inservice inspection during the first forty month period of the first ten year interval for North Anna Power Station Unit No. 1 in our letter, serial no. 301/071477 dated August 9,19 77.

In that letter we stated; "Should certain ASME Section XI code requirements be discovered to be impractical due to unforeseen reasons during the process of performing inspections or tests, relief will be requested from the specific Section XI code requirement at that time." During the first refueling outage, an area requiring an additional relief request was found.

Ultrasonic examinations are required to be conducted in accordance with the provisions of Appendix I of Section XI and Article 5 of Section V by Para-graph IWA-2232. As an alternative to using Article 5 of Section V, Appendix III of Section XI of the 1974 Edition, Winter,1975 addenda of the ASME Boiler and pipingPressure systems.Vessel Code will be used for ultrasonic examination of nuclear It is recognized that Appendix III of Section XI was issued in the Winter,1975, Addenda and, as such, has not been officially recognized by the NRC by reference in 10 CFR 50. However, Appendix III is the first guideline that has been published in the ASME Code for ultrasonic examination of pipe welds and, as such, its use is essential.

Very truly yours,
