Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (DE-1)

Docket No. 50-289 Operating License No. DPR-50 URC letter dated November 17, 1976, requested that detailed information be submitted for NRC review describing the insertice inspection and testing program for DE Unit 1.

The program covers the following five parts :

1.

Insertice inspection of Class 1 compenent pressure boundaries.

2.

Ins'

' ce inspection of Class 2 component pressure boundaries.

3.

Inservice inspection of Class 3 compenent pressure bcundaries.

h.

Inservice testing of pu=ps cperated by emergency pcVer sou ces.

5 Inservice testing of Class 1, 2 and 3 valves which perform safety functions.

Please find, as Attachment A, the requested information for inservice inspection of the Class 1 cc=ponent pressure boundaries. The Other parts of the program are being developed and vill be submitted at a later date. Also included is a set of the DE-1 ISI piping diagrans.

'de vill be referencing these diagrams in the submittal of the other parts of this program.

1491 243 M2CfdMP Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation August 17, 1977 Attn:

R. W. Reid, C'ief GCL 0781 The Class 1 component pressure boundarf inspection program in Attachment A follows the general approach developed during the design and construction of DE-1.

The original TMI Class 1 insertice inspection progrs= is descrf. ad in the current DE-1 technical speci-fications and has been reviewed and accepted by the NRC.

Modifications have been included in the program described in Attachment A to reflect recent changes to Code requirements and the experience gained during performance of presertice baseline inspecticns and during the first refueling outage.

As described in Attachment A, cur Class 1 inspection progra= is based en the " focused approach" and differs in sc=e respects frc= the ASME Code. We consider that this inspecticn prcgram is an i.~provement over Code requirements.

We feel that the review and approval of this Class 1 portien of the program should be performed as scen as pcssible and not delayed until the re=aining portions are available.

S 5cerely,

/
