Dear Sir:

Subject:

Potential Unreviewed Safety Question Regarding Safety Function Interactions with Non-Safety Grade Systems This letter responds to your letter, Reference (b), regarding the above subject, which was further detailed in Reference (c).

Maine Yankee has completed an investigation of the systems specifically identified in Reference (c). A description of this investigation, which includes an identification of possible interactions between non-safety grade and safety grade systems, and their impact on the safety analysis are presented in the enclosure entitled:

" Report on Failure Effects of Equipment Not Qualified for Accident Related Environments". Where such interactions were found, appropriate corrective actions have been instituted as detailed in the enclosure.

Our ii

..tigation did not identify any potential failures which would alter the conclusions of the operating license.

As detailed in the enclosure, Maine Yankee is continuing, under Phase II, its efforts in this matter. We believe this work will involve a long time commitment and that the scope of the action required is fully consiatent with the requirements of NUREC-0578, and should therefore be integrated with the planned response sequence for compliance with the NUREG.
