Dear Mr. Stampley:
SUBJECT:
MOISTURE CONTROL FOR E7018 ARC-WELDING ELECTRODES (GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2) Your letter dated August 23, 1979 requested ou concurrence with your use of E7018 arc-welding electrodes in unheated containers for periods of up to 14 hours when issued for use on plain carbon steel weldments. You state that your request is based on your review of the original test data contained in the report entitled " Qualification of an Alternative Electrode Control Program for AWS Dl.1 for the Arizona Nuclear Power Project, Palo Verde Units 1, 2 and 3," dated March 15, 1978. We have completed our review of the information contained and referenced in your letter and conclude that the use of E7018 arc-welding electrodes in unheated containers for periods of up to 14 hours when issued for use on plain carbon steel weldments is acceptable. It should be noted, however, that our acceptance is limited to those E7018 arc-welding electrodes that have been appropriately qualified by testing as described in the alternative electrode control program for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station.
