June 20, 1979 Ms. Jenny Lenz 90640 Sunderman Road Springfield, OR 97477
Dear Ms. Lenz:
Your letter of June 7 to Chairman liendrie has been referred to our office for reply. We appreciate the time you have taken to share your thoughts with us..
i When President Carter visited the Three Mile Island facility on i
~ April 1, he went considerably closer to the plant than one mile.
In fact, he visited the control room, which is situated in the midst of the plant. Also, our recollection is that he did not wear a radiation suit, although he and Mrs. Carter did wear '
" booties" over their shoes.
One of the primary. responsibilities of tiie fluclear Regulatory Comission is to ensure that, if nuclear power is used to generate i'
electricity in this country, the public health and safety and the environment are protected.
In this context, individual reactors and groups of power reactors are and have been shut down for i
various lengths of time based on safety-related considerations.
I Likewise, the staff has refused to support applications to build i
nuclear power facilities on safety or environmental grounds.
However, the Comission does not at this tine have information available that would make it necessary to suspend the construction and operation of all nuclear power reactors for either safety or environmental reasons.
Since_ rely,
~
