Dear Mr. Proffitt:
SUBJECT:
FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM - NORTH ANNA POWER STATION, UNITS i AND 2 In your letter of June 11, 1979, you requested further investigation of two items which were discussed in the North Anna Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report which is attached to Amendment No. 8 of the North Anna Power Station Unit i Operating License.
The first issue was related to item IV.S.2 of the Safety Evaluation Report which stated that a sprinkler system be installed over the component cooling pumps and on elevation 259.5 feet. This item was discussed and agreed to during the August 8, 1978 site visit.
Further, in our letter dated August 22, 1978, our position on this issue was transmitted as Item 3 of Enclosure 1.
It is also in accord with out fire protection guidelines to install a sprinkler system in fire areas containing redundant divisions.
Therefore, we feel that this particular issue is still justified and your request regarding this matter is cenied.
The second issue that you asked us to review concerns the addition of a 3-hour fire damper in the wall separating the control room from the turbine ouilding.
We agree with you that two norrally closed seismically-qualified butterfly valves in series, provide adequate separation between the control room and the turbine building.
It was not our criginal intent to require that a 3-hour fire damper be installed in this particular duct. Therefore, the 3-hcur fire barrier in this ventilation duct is not cequired. Our fire protection consultant concurs with this evaluation.
