Dear Chainmn Hendrie:

As a Congressnnn representim a district with three eierat ional nuclear rc'er plants and another under construction, a altipyard that builds ruclear sulinarines, aryl a corparri that nunufactures reactor cores, I have, een acutely concerned about the mfety of nr/ constitu(nts i n t;.

light of the recent accident at the Titree title Island niiclear pcAr plant. The Second Congressional District witich I represent !as cae of the liighest mncentrations of nuclear per generation in the coratry, providing 58; of the electric power in Connecticut.

The pecple in nrf district have come tn rely ' mon nuclear rarr, but the proyinti.ty of nuclear facilities to their heen is an overpresent potential threat to th2ir safety. At the present Line, there are tr o nun '

unansa red questions alout the probability of another najor accident occuring, the long-tem effects of lo ;-level radiation, anci the hazardt of nuclear mste disposal and transportation. Tle federal govenn nt nwds to reassess its current egulations mntrolling On develeprent, mns tructi on,

and operation of nuclear facilities.

The IIRC has recent-ly taken steps in inprove its procedures for tFe conitoring and oversight of nuclear Imr plants, 1;ut t hore are still on; aspects of tho I3C's current policy that muld li' reevaluated and irproved.

I have outlined Irlow an elevcn Inint plan that i nw you will cost seriously consider.

1) All nuclear romr plant.s dotermined to b, sinilar in desicm and construction to th2 Tlute Rile Island plant should b, inim diately shut down until thu tac certifies that th; design and neeluv ml h

problems c:q3erienced at Threo Ri]e Island are not present or luw tren wrrected ut tiene -
