L. Ha rev of ycur office was verbally notified of a situatien which Metropclitan Edisen Cc=pany censidered to be repcrtable in acecrdance with the require =ents of 10CyE50.55(e). This letter censtitutes l the required thirty-day fellev-up letter. I I l Descrittien n l During the course of obtaining pu=p head curves fer the TMI-2 3uilding Spray Syste= ?=ps, it was disecvered that the 3 pu=p did not =eet the pu=p head curve supplied by the vender, 3&'i Canada. Measured pu=p head was abcut 205 belev the -aaufacturer 's curves. Preble=s have been experienced with the A l 3cilding Spray ?mp Meter, therefore, no pu=p head curve has yet been rm in the field. The vender was called to the site to inspect the pu=ps and could l find nothing physically wrong with the pu=ps er their installation. I At the vendcr's request, both pu=ps vere disas:e= bled, and their rotating l elements vere returned to the =anufacturer. Grier, Directer Sept e=ber 21 1977 GQL 1290 Analysis of Safety Inclicaticns (continued) Neither of these pcssibilities could have occur ed due to the thoroug. ness h of the Startup sad Test Program which requires pu=p head crve develop =ent en sit e. For this reasen, this incident could not have developed into a situation which veuld have prevented the safe shutdevn of the unit nor would there have been an adverse effect en the health or safety of the public or the unit staff. Corrective Action The pt7 rotating ele =ents have been returned to the vender for retesting in the vender's test leep. Sese tests shculd re-veriff the data obtained in the field. Depending en the results of these tests, several optiens are avad'stble includ**g revised calculations to justiff the use of these pu=ps at red.uced head er =cdificatien of the rotating asse=blies to obtain the higher head. 3abecch & 'Jilecx estir.ates that both Building Spray Pu=ps vill be ret =ned to the site by the end of Septe@c.r, 1977 unless i=peller rework is required. If i=peller rework is necessary an additicnal veek's delay per pt7 can be expected. Infer =atien and doci:=entation associated with this incident v4 be available en site fer your reviev.
