THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION STAFF REVIEW OF U.S.
DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) NOTIFICATION OF THE ABANDONMENT OF MONITORING WELL 0841 AT THE SHIPROCK NEW MEXICO URANIUM MILL TAILINGS RADIATION CONTROL ACT SITE (Docket Number WM-00058)
Dear Mr. Kautsky:
I am writing in response to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) letter dated June 27, 2019, informing the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that the U.S. Department of Energy intends to abandon monitoring well 0841 at the Shiprock, New Mexico, Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) site, dated April 25, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS] Accession Number ML19186A271). Your letter states that the well has been damaged by a vehicle accident and that repair of the well is not possible. You also state that the DOE will address the requirements for replacing the well when the Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP) for the site is revised to reflect the decommissioning of the evaporation pond liner. Finally, you state that the DOE has submitted an abandonment plan to the Navajo Nation Water Code Administration for their review and approval. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has reviewed your letter and does not have any questions or comments at this time.
M. Kautsky In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRCs Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure, a copy of this letter will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records component of NRCs ADAMS. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.
