UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 August 13, 2019 The Honorable Henry McMaster Governor of South Carolina 1100 Gervais Street Columbia, SC 29201

Dear Governor McMaster:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, I extend our congratulations to the State of South Carolina on its 50th anniversary of becoming an Agreement State. On September 11, 1969, Governor Robert E. McNair entered into an Agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission to assume regulatory responsibility for certain radioactive materials under Section 274 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended. This made South Carolina the 20th State to become an Agreement State, effective September 15, 1969.

We commend the State on its successful efforts throughout the years in regulating the safe use of radioactive materials in South Carolina, thereby protecting public health and safety.

We encourage your continued support of the important services provided by the Agreement State Program.

We wish you continued success with your program and look forward to our agencies continuing to work cooperatively in the future. Please extend our congratulations to the staff and management of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, for their successful implementation of the South Carolina Agreement State Program.

Kristine L. Svinicki cc: Susan Jenkins
