Subject: University of Alaska Fairbanks amendment request
Roberto,
I have reviewed the license amendment request from University of Alaska Fairbanks to remove the Anderson
Building in Juneau as a location of use from their license. For this case, the licensee states that 1000 uCi of
Fe-55 was present in the building , all of which has by now been used in experiments, decayed in storage, or
been disposed of.
Since the half life of Fe-55 is > 120 days, this cannot be a Group 1 per NUREG-1757
The licensee's wipe test results indicate well below screening criteria , and a DP is not required by the
license. So this is a Group 2.
No DP, EA, or FONSI is required here, just a license amendment.
We would not recommend a NRC confirmatory survey in this case. See NUREG-1757, Vol. 1, 15.4.5:
"NRC staff should assign higher priority for conducting confirmatory surveys at sites that may
pose a greater potential threat to the public health and safety."

I conclude that this should be a straightforward license amendment action , based on their submittal. However,
I would ask the licensee to provide some more information:
For disposals via sanitary sewer, show the calculation of how much time was required for flushing the
sink with water.
They should perform wipe tests of the sink traps where the material was disposed .
Demonstrate how they calculated the lower limit of detection (LLD) for the liquid scintillation counter.
