Docket Nos.

50~280 50~281 License Nos. -* DPR--32 DPR...;37 This is in response to your letter of September* :14, '1978 which requested* the.performance of environmental.qualification.testing on certain Continental cable used* at Surry Power* Station.

We intend to perform the testing which you have requested*.

A copy of our proposed testing program is attached for your review*.*

Our current targetdatefor.test.c.ompletion.is*october31', 1978.

However, thedateof*testc.ompletion will be dependent upon completion of your.review of our testing program and on the availability of test facili-ties~

Should it become apparent that there will be a significant delay beyond our target date,* you will.be notified.

Very truly yours,*

INTRODUCTION The qualification Test Program*described in the specification is to be

.1conducted to determine _wh(ther electrical instrumentation cables 1rnanufactured by the Continental Wire &: Cable Corporation (now a di vision of Anaconda Co.) will function properly under environmental conditions

  • simulating those expected within the containment of the Surry Power

.Stations Units No. 1 and No. 2 of the Virginia Electric and Power Company during a postulated loss of cooling accident (LOCA) or during a main steam line break (MSLB).

The test program will include irradiation andadditional aging of the cable samples which have been in service.at Surry for more than seven years, exposure of the cables to a combined steam and chemical spray while electrically energized and a comparison of the physical properties of the samples before and after the environmental exposures.

Separate tests will be*conducted, one to simulate the LOCA conditions and a second test to simulate the MSLB environment *
