VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY RICHMOND,VIRGINIA 23261 April 26 3 1978

  • Mr. Edson G. Case, Acting Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 Attention:

Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 4

Dear Mr. Case:

Serial No. 234 PO&M/DLB:das Docket No. 50-280 License No. DPR-32 REGULATORY DOCKET filE COPY The purpose of this letter is to present the Surry Unit No. 1 steam generator surveillance program for the outage which began on April 22, 1978.

The program will consist of the following:

1..

Eddy current testing of U-bends as follows:

a.

Unplugged tubes in all steam generators rows 1-5, columns 1-94 tested at 100 KHZ using beaded flex probe.

b.

Any tubes which give indications at 100 KHZ will be reprobed at 400 KHZ.

2.

Tube gauging will be conducted in the cold legs of all steam generators utilizing probe sizes 0.610 11 and 0.540".

Eitent of gauging is as in-

. dicateci on Figure 1 (dashed line).

3.

Tube gauging will be conducted in the hot legs of all steam generators utilizing three different eddy current probe sizes (0.540", 0.61011, and

0. 650" diameters).

Extent of gauging is indicated in Figure 1 (solid line).

The 15% strain contour at 11.5 EFPM past closure was utilized as the basis for the boundary.

4.

Wrapper to shell annulus measurements will be performed in steam genera-tor C.

5.

iiandhole inspections using photographs will be performed to inspect flow slots and determine the extent of hourglassing on the visible tube support plates in all steam generators.

6.

All tubes which did not pass a. 650" probe during the inspection of November 1977 will be tested as well as surrounding tubes for a distance of 2 tubes in all directions.

For any surrounding tube which does not pass the

  • 650" probe, all of its surrounding tubes for a distance of 2 tubes in all directions will be tested; this process continuing until no further indications are found.
