Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and*Enforcement Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406
Dear Mr. Grier:
NRC IE BULLETIN NO. 78-04 NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION March 23, 1978 In response to your letter of February 21, 1978, transmitting NRC IE Bulletin No. 78-04 which was received on February 24, 1978, we have investigated this matter with respect to applicability to Salem No. 1 and No. 2 Units.
The following is in response to the concerns addressed in the subject bulletin:
The noted NAMCO D2400X limit switches were found on a number of containment isolation valves (inside containment) for both Units 1 and 2 at Salem.
The control circuitry for these valves utilize the limit switches as a seal-in feature similar to that, described in the NRC Bulletin and the referenced Westinghouse Technical Bulletin NSD-TB-77-13.
The seal-in circuitry will be modified where possible to eliminate the need.for the limit switch contacts.
In cases where this is not feasible, the NAMCO D2400X limit switches will be replaced with suitably qualified limit switches.
This modification/replacement program is expected to be completed for Unit 1 by the end of ths first refueling outage and for pnit 2 prior to receipt of operating license.
In addition to the NAMCO limit switches a few isolation valves utilize a different type limit switch in a similar seal-in applica-tion.
The qualification data for these switches is now under review.
If not suitable, they will also be modified or replaced as appropriate.
If you have any additional questions, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.
