INSERVICE INSPECTION AND TESTING PROGRAMS NO. 1 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 Enclosed is our response to NRC letter of June 28, 1977 requesting additional information for evaluation of the Sal*em Unit No. 1 Inservice Inspection Program. The response consfats of replies on an i tern by i tern basis to your Request for Addi d:onal Informa-tion attached to the June 28 letter. Certain items have required extensive discussion or documentation and these are included as attachments to the enclosure. In addition, some items have resulted in revisions to the examination plan and these also are attached as revised documents or sections of documents.

Attachment 1 consists of revised Tables 1, 2 and 3 of the examination plan, indicating reclassification of components.

Attachment 2 is a justification for performance of ultrasonic examination of piping at 100% of reference level, prepared by Southwest Research Institute as agents for PSE&G.

Attachment 3 consists of a condensed table from the Salem No. 1 Preoperational Baseline Examination Report showing only those items to which exceptions were taken, and a separate table explaining certain exceptions in greater detail. Sketches have been included for clarification where necessary.

Attachment 4 consists of references to the valve testing program, including reasons why certain Category C check valves cannot be full stroke exercised during plant operation, and a revised list of the Category C check valves.

  • 10/11/77 consists of Inservice Inspection Boundary Diagrams that have been revised to reflect PSE&G's updated position on Pressure testing of Class 2 components (exception to the code is no longer being requested) and the extension of System boundaries where NRC Circular 76-06 applies.

The information submitted herein supersedes the referenced portions of the Salem Inservice Inspection Program contained in PSE&G letter of February 28, 1977, and subsequently discussed in Bethesda, Maryland with your staff on August 5 and September 1, 1977.
