DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY BUILDING EXPANSION On October 23, 2018, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a telephone conference call with staff from the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to discuss the progress of Building 245 (Health Physics Building), which includes a planned Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 36 Irradiator Facility. On November 21, 2017, NRC issued Amendment 9 to the SNM-362 license, authorizing NIST to proceed with the construction of a Part 36 irradiator facility in accordance with 10 CFR Section 36.15, Commencement of Construction. The irradiator facility is one small segment of a building expansion project that will add four floors of laboratory and research space to the Health Physics Building. NIST currently has an irradiator facility and intends to move one 15,000 Curie irradiator to the new facility. The purpose of the call was to discuss project status and ensure all required steps of commissioning are understood and coordinated, to include licensing and inspection. My last visit to the site was in June 2018. I am attaching the telephone summary for your use. The summary contains no proprietary or classified information.
