Dear Sir:
1 am writing concerning the controversy of the Sherman Harris Nuclear Power Plant located eighteen miles soutl.west of Ra3.eight ]I C.'uclear power may indeed be the part of the solution of.'ur energy crisis; r
~ however, the Shexman Harris plant poses a potential threat, to thousands of people.
The site for the plant i.'s locate'd over a fault.
According to sourc'es throughout the. scientific circle.
~ the AEC ha stated that, the Harris fault is the..Largest ever fouisd beneath a nuclear power plant site..
Although ther'e has been no genera1 agreement a.. to how ris)~ construction of a plant would be, the Atomic Mergy Commission h said that the fault is probably 200 mi3:lion years old and.'chat any I'auht over 3/~000 years old is safe enough to build on.
Dr. S.
Duncan Heron, Jr.,
chairman of the Geology Department at Duke University, disputes the AEC's analysis of the situation and states that although earthquakes in the east axe not. frequent~
when t)icy
>> ~
do occur, they"are more severe than those in California.
According
'o Dr. Hexon, one of the worst, aspect" of the fault is 'that it is within several hundred feet of onc of the:nuclear reactoxs.

'4 Other oppcsition comes from David H. Steward, Department of Geolo~~
~ 'at the University of North Carolina.
He feels that Caro3,ina Power and I.ipse I
I did not conduct.
a complete history of earthquakes in plannix~ the site.
Their report contains incomplete and misleading information which creat,esI the impression that the site is completely safe.
They stat,e that the Charleston quake of 3.806 which was felt at the Sherman Harris.,'itc would not happen for another 10,000 years, and even then would not. b='
closer than 200 miles.
No scientific grounds were given to justify this
'nformatio According to Steward, Carolina Power and. Xight stated that the Jonesboro Fault, foux miles to the east; has been i.nactive fox at.
least 100 million years.
He feels. that as
'many as two or. three smaII tremors felt in'Raleigh over the past century could. have ox'iginated from the fault.
Hr., Stewaxt states further that, "earthqu83;e risk for nuc3ear power plant citin~ is done by the power'company which reports its. findings to
'AEC."
Xn my opinion until all doubt as to the safety of the site is relieved, constxuction should not be allowed.
A more detai3.ed study of the area should be undertaken.
Efforts whould. be taken to study any.
changes in the area.
A record should be kept of'ny noticeable changes.
lf a more thorough study is not conducted before construction begins, we could be io, for a lesson Qe will never forget.
This is: of grave concern to me and other informed cit.isens of the s Please use your influence to -top 'this proposal or to delay this decision until a more thorouGh study is made.
.Yqurs truly,
