X am writing concerning the controversy of the Sherman Harris Nuclear Power Plant located eighteen miles sout)':lesC of Baleen.gh, N.

G.

Nuclear power may indeed be the part of the solution of our emery crisis, however, the Sherman Harris plant poses a potential threat, to thousands of people.

The site'or the plant is locat d over a faul".

According to sources throughout the'ci.entific circles~ the AD~ ha" stated that Che Harris fault is the Largest ever.

Other oppo" ition comes from 0"vid H. S5'eward, Department of Geolo~~

~ at the Unjve'rsj.ty of North Carolina.

He feels 'that Caro3ina power and L'.rg did not, conduct a complete history of earthcuakes in plannir~ the site.

Their report contains incomplet;e and misleading information which creates the impression that the'ite is complet, ely safe.

They state that t.="

Charleston quake of 1886 which.was'Selt at the. Sherman Harris site would not happen, for another 10,000 years, and. even then would not b'.

closer than 200 miles.

No scientific grornds were given to justify th-'s '!

information.

According to Steward, Carolj.na Porter and Xight stated that the Joncsboro Fault, four miles to the east; ha been j.nactjve for..t.

least 100 million yew..s.

He feels that as many as two or t))ree sma11 tremors felt, in Raleigh over the past century could..have oxiginat,ed from the fault.

Nr. Stewart states further that

'earthguaI e ri')f fo) ))uc3ea) p >Y..'r plant citing is done, by the powe'r company which reports its, f'ix)dingus to AEC."

Xn my opinion until all doubt; as t,o the safety of the site is relieved, construction should not be. allowed.

A more detailed s$.udge of the area should be undertaken.

Efforts whould be taken to stud+

ar.'-t changes in the area.

A record should be. kept of any noticeable chmgcs.

Xf a more thorough study is not conducted. before construction begirs, we could'be ia, for,a lesson we will never forget.

This is of grave concern to me and, other informed cit,j.se))s of'h-" s

'Please use your influence to st,op this proposal or to delay this decis:on unt,il a more i,horougl) study is made.

Ygurs truly, 4'gQp s 8+i /
