Dear Mr. Case:

On December 8, 1977, Mr. P.

W.

Howe of Carolina Power

& Light Company contacted Mr. Richard DeYoung and Mr. Olan Parr of your staff to inform them of a minor geological feature which had been discovered on December 7, 1977, approx-imately five miles south of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP) site, while performing earth work associated with the previously approved railroad location.

This feature can be described as a discontinuity of a one inch wide quartz vein which passes through the gneiss beneath the spillway to the west of the main dam.

This type of structure is typical of geological features in the

~

Slate Belt rocks and was anticipated by the earlier exhaustive study (Fault Investigation Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant Units 1, 2, 3, and 4 submitted to the NRC on March 7, 1975) which was reviewed and approved by your staff.

Preliminary assessment indicates that this feature is of limited length and is older than the Triassic sediments at the site.

In accordance with good engineering practices, we are evaluating the impact of this feature.

We will inform your staff of the result of this evaluation.

Yours very truly, M. A. McDuffie Senior Vice President Engineering
