SUMMARY

OF JUNE 11, 2018, LICENSING MEETING WITH DUKE ENERGY TO DISCUSS A PLANNED LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST TO REMOVE CONTAINMENT VALVE INJECTION WATER FROM SPECIFIED CONTAINMENT ISOLATION VALVES FOR THE CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 (EPID L-2018-LRM-0037)

On June 11, 2018, a Category 1 public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of Duke Energy Carolinas (Duke Energy, the licensee) via teleconference. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the licensee's planned license amendment request (LAR) to remove Containent Valve Injection Water Sytem (NW) from specified Containment Isolation Valves (CIVs) for the Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 (Catawba). The meeting notice and agenda, dated May 25, 2018, are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML18145A031. A list of attendees is enclosed.

The licensee presented the proposed changes in a power point slide presentation to aid in the NRC's review (ADAMS Accession No. ML18157A032). The slides for this meeting were made available along with the public meeting notice.

During the meeting, the licensee presented the following topics:

1. Introductions/Opening Remarks
2. Description of the NW System
3. Planned revisions to Catawba's Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (UFSAR)
4. Planned revisions to Catawba's Technical Specification Bases (TS Bases)
5. Precendents
6. Planned Modifications/Future Inspections/Future Maintenance Activities
  • The NRC staff provided feedback to the licensee in the following areas:

o NW system reliability/operability o Plant modifications (abandoning/removing the solenoid valves) o CIVs performing their intended safety function o Precendents related to the planned LARs o Potential leakage paths during accident conditions o Function of subect solenoid valves, impact from planned LAR o No significant hazards consideration considerations

No members of the public were in attendance.

No regulatory decisions were made during this meeting.
