SUBJECT:

SURRY NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2, REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELATED TO REACTOR VESSEL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY (GENERIC LETTER 92-01, REVISION 1, SUPPLEMENT 1) (TAC NOS. MA0576 AND MA0577)

Dear Mr. O'Hanlon:

In your letter dated September 25, 1997, you responded to a May 22, 1997, NRC request for additional information (RAI). The RAI requested an assessment of the application of the ratio procedure, as described in Position 2.1 of Regulatory Guide 1.99, Revision 2, to the pressure/temperature (PT) limits curves and the low temperature overpressure (L TOP) limits for Surry 1 and 2.

The NRC staff has reviewed your response to the RAI and determined that the assessment of reactor pressure vessel integrity did not properly account for chemical composition and irradiation environment differences. Our evaluation is enclosed. As a result, we request you resubmit your evaluation to account for irradiation environment and chemical composition differences. Your response is requested within 90 days of receipt of this letter.
