SUBJECT:
GENERIC LETTER 88-03, "STEAM BINDING OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMPS" (TAC NOS. 67280 AND 67281)
I On February 17, 1988, Generic Letter 88-03, "Steam Binding of Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps," was issued.
The generic 1 etter requested a 11 1 i censees of operating pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and holders of construction permits for PWRs to confirm that appropriate procedures are in place, and will be maintained, to minimize the occurrence of steam binding of 1the auxiliary feedwater (AFW) ptimps.
The procedures require monitoring fluid conditions within the AHJ system each shift during times when the system is required to be operable, and recognizing steam binding and restoring the AFW system to operable status should steam binding occur.
Your response, dated May 23, 1988, confirmed that the necessary procedures are in place at Surry Units 1 and 2.
However, your response did not specifically address your commitment to maintain such procedures.
Per the telecon between myse 1f and T. Shaub of your staff on June 28, 1988, it is understood that you will maintain these procedures as requested by the generic letter. Thus, your response to Generic Letter 88-03 is satisfactory and no further action is necessary.
This completes our action on this issue.
