- -'Docket Nos. 50-280 and 50-281 LICENSEE:
Virginia Electric and Power Company FACILITY:
Surry Power Station, Units 1 and 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF THE EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION MEETING HELD ON JUNE 10, 1988, IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND On Jun~ 10, 1988, the NRC staff met with the representatives from Virginia Electric and Power Company (the licensee) to discuss the qualifications of Amphenol electrical penetration assemblies installed at Surry Units 1 and 2.
As discussed in ci letter dated June 2, 1988, from S. A. Varga to D. S. Cruden, the staff was concerned that the Amphenol electrical penetrations used at Surry may have similar equipment qualification problems as those identified at the Braidwood Power Station Unit 2.
The licensee indicated that the penetrations used at Surry were somewhat different in design than those used at Braidwood.
Also, the licensee indicated that they have additional test results which demonstrate that the penetrations installed at Surry have adequate margin in insulation resistance (IR) during Design Basis Accident (OBA) conditions, and their pe.netrations are qualified to operate in the harsh environment following the OBA.
However, the licensee has to revise its qualification documentation review (QDR) package to include the Surry specific test results, for showing the compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49.
At the end of the meeting the staff concluded that the potential deficiency identified in the Braidwood Unit 2 containment penetrations was not applicable to the Surry units.
However, the licensee has to update its qualification documentation review package in order to fully demonstrate the qualification of these penetrations in accordance with 10 CFR 50.49.
No firm schedule was*
established for revising the QDR package.
However, the licensee is expected to make a reasonable effort to complete the documentation.
A list of the attendees is provided in the enclosure.
