SUBJECT:

STATISTICAL DNBR EVALUATION METHODOLOGY, VEP-NE-2, SURRY POWER STATION, UNITS NO. 1 & N0.2 (SURRY-1&2)

AND NORTH ANNA POWER STATION, UNITS NO. l& N0.2 (NA-Ht2).

By letter dated October 8, 1985, Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) submitted topical report VEP-NE-2 "Statistical DNBR Evaluation Methodology."

This report describes VEPCO's methodology for statistically treating several of the important uncertainties in Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (DNBR) analysis.

We have completed our review of the topical report and find it acceptable with the conditions stated in our enclosed Safety Evaluation Report.

The statistical methodology will replace the deterministic methodology which is presently used for DNBR analysis of both the Surry and NA units. Similar statistical methodologies have been used by the three PWR vendors. This re-port includes sample calculations for NA-1&2 based on typical uncertainties.

Plant-specific packages for NA-1&2 and Surry-1&2 which are based on plant-specific data will be submitted, reviewed and approved before this methodology is actually implemented.

The uncertainties used in the plant-specific packages will be justified as part of these packages.
