VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY SURRY POWER STATION UNIT NOS. 1 and 2 REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF PROPOSED DISPOSAL METHODOLOGY Pursuant to 10CFR20.302(a), Virginia Electric and Power Company requests approval for the disposal of very low-level radioactively contaminated soil at its Surry Power Station. The attached evaluation, "Disposal of Low-Level Radioactively Contaminated Soil in the Dredge Spoils Pond" provides the supporting documentation of our request for approval to dispose of approximately 10,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and gravel from Surry's Radiological Control Area (RCA). A comprehensive renovation project at Surry Power Station has been initiated as part of the Company's commitment to upgrade the station's environment. The contaminated soil requiring disposal will be generated by this project.
The report includes a description of the contaminated soil and conditions for its disposal in the dredge spoils pond. The characteristics of the proposed disposal area, which is located on Company owned property, is provided with an assessment of the radiological consequences resulting from the disposal of the soil.
Paving of the RCA is scheduled to begin in March, 1987. In order to ensure the planned renovation is maintained on schedule, Virginia Electric and Power Company requests that the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission review and consider this application by February 15, 1987.
