Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 50-281 License Nos.:
DPR-32 DPR-37 Gentlemen:
VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY SURRY POWER STATION NUREG 0737, ITEM II.B.3 STATUS Our letter Serial No. 227D dated December 27, 1982, indicated that a status report, on our efforts to make the Post Accident Sampling System (PASS) operational, will be provided in March, 1983. Since December, 1982, the following major progress has been made:
- 1.
Waste Drain Tank and Compressor*
The major problem associated with past schedule difficulties was the failure of the evacuating compressor and pressure transmitter on the drain tank.
The drain tank is a negative pressure tank used to assist containment air sampling and to draw liquid samples out of the sampling panels. The evacuating compressor has been repaired and is operational, and the pressure transmitter has been replaced and is also operational.
PASS panel drains to the waste tank have been modified, checked out, and are operational.
- 2.
Unit 2 Air Sample A Unit 2 air sample has been drawn to verify flow capability.
- 3.
Unit 2 Containment Isolation Valves
- 4.
The operability of the Unit 2 Containment Air Sample Isolation Trip Valves has been verified.
Ion Chromatograph The Dionex portable Ion Chromatograph, used for chloride analysis, has been set up, checked out, and is operational.

- 5.
Gas Chromatograph Defective filaments and separatory columns were replaced. This analyzer is in the final testing phase.
- 6.
Particulate, Iodine, and Gas Partitioner 2
Electrical design modifications required to make the unit fully automatic and compatible with the Containment Air Sample Panel have been completed (design only - construction not complete). This will result in reducing operator exposure during the post accident sarnpl ing.
- 7.
Containment Air Sample Panel (CASP) Heat Tracing The heat tracing system for the CASP has been installed and is currently being checked out.
As indicated in our letter dated December 27, 1982, all necessary manpower and expertise have been directed to the startup of the PASS in order to meet the completion date of June l, 1983.
Vepco will keep the NRC staff informed of any significant changes in the PASS implementation effort.
