e VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY RICHMOND., VIRGINIA 23261 R.H.LEASBUBO VICE PRESIDENT NUCLEAR OPERATIONS October 1, 1982 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attn:

Mr. Darrel G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY STATUS OF NUREG-0737, ITEM II.B.2 Serial No. 570 NO/DWL:acm Docket Nos. 50-280 50-281 50-338 50-339 License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 NPF-4 NPF-7 As per a request from the Surry and North Anna NRC Project Managers, Vepco reviewed the implementation status of NUREG-0737, Item II.B.2 (Plant Shielding).

As of the date of this letter all work associated with Item II.B.2 has been completed at Surry and North Anna Power Stations.

The specifics of our review are as follows:

Surry Power Station As indicated in our response to Generic Letter 82-05 for Surry dated May 17, 1982 (Serial Nb.

227),

two modifications required by Item II.B.2 were incomplete but were to be completed by July 1, 1982.

These items were: 1) the replacement of the Unit 2 primary drain tank containment isolation valve seats and 2) the testing of the newly installed control valves to adjust service water to the charging pump lube oil cooler.

The valve seat replacement was completed by July 1, 1982.

The service water control valves were available for service on July 1, 1982 and were put into operation as the charging pumps were placed into operation.

Our response to Generic Letter 82-05 also identified the need to replace the Service Water Radiation Monitor pumps and motors to comply with the requirements of Item II.B.2.

The need to replace these pumps and motors was identified as an environmental qualification item and as such is considered by Vepco to be a separate issue from the plant shielding requirements of Item II.B.2.

Interim actions were taken, however, which re-configured the Service Water Radiation Monitor pumps and motors to provide adequate shielding (via distance from source) of this equipment.

North Anna Power Station As indicated in our response to Generic Letter 82-05 for North Anna dated May 17, 1982 (Serial No. 226), two modifications required by Item II.B.2 were incomplete.

These items were the installation of remote operated valves for the Containment Atmosphere Clean-up System and the replacement of Teflon support pads with Torlon support pads on the Unit 1 Outside Recirculation 9210120265 B21001 PDR ADOCK 05000280 p____

l VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY TO Harold R. Denton Spray Pumps and the Low Head SI Pumps.

These modifications were to be completed during the North Anna Unit 1 refueling outage, but no later than January 1, 1983.

The Unit 1 refueling outage began in early Summer, 1982 and is still in progress.

However, the two remaining modifications for Item II.B. 2 identified above and in our Generic Letter 82-05 response have been completed.

The information in this letter regarding the completion of the II.B.2 requirements will be contained in the next revision to Vepco' s "Response to NUREG-0737 Post-TMI Requirements."

The next revision/update is planned for later this year.
