DESCRIPTION OF EVENT

e On February 4, 1981, with Unit 2 operating at 100% power, Periodic Test 22.3C was in progress with the diesel at full load to prove operab-ility of the //3---EDG following battezy maintenance.

The air motors -forp_referred start 112 were found t;o

This event is -a degraded-mode-of. -

operation as s-pec:ified in T. S. 3.16. B.1 and is report$ le in accordance with T. S. 6.6~2.B~(2).

EROBABLE CONSEQUENCES AND STATUS OF REDUNDANT EQUIPMENT:

  • The Emergency Diesel Cenerators provide power to vital equipment in the event of loss of off-site paver.

The preferred start /11 air motors of //3: EDG remained dperab!eC In addition, the No. 2 EDG was operable and would have supplied* p~er to the redundant safeguards e~uipment.

'lhe EDG was repaired and returned to an operable status within the time limitations of Tech. Specs.

Therefore, the health and safety of the public were not affected._

CAUSE

Air leakage through the Solen~~d Valve for preferred start #2 caused the motors to remain engaged to the flywheel.

4.

IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTION

The air supply to the"_ preferred* start //2 was* isolated to _ dis~ng~g__e*_ t~!:! ____ mqtors._

5.

SUBSEQUENT CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The soleniod valve and both air motets for perferr~d: _st_~r_1; /12._w_e~e __ _teplaced __ anL __________ _

_ the EDG tested* satisfactorily.

ACTION TAKEN TO PREVENT RECURRENCE:
