Dear Mr. Proffitt:
NSIC By 1 etter dated Sp13tember 13, l 979~ you requested our concurrence to increase the present surveillance period for the first year from monthly to quarterly for the HEPA filters for the engineered storage facility which contains the steam generator sections from the steam generator repair program.
A permanent surveill a nee program would be established based on a review of the first year of surveillance data.
We agree with your conclusion that monthly replacement of the HEPA filters is too frequent.
Since we expect very little airborne activity to be present on the outside of the steam generators, and your data *lndicate that no detectable radioactive partkulates are present~ we concur that the relaxed replacement and radioactive analysis frequency is justffied.
However, because of the possibflity of the weather affecting the filters, we request that you perform a monthly visual inspection*to assure that the integrity of the filters is maintained.

Dear Mr. Proffitt:
- "November 19," 1979 By letter dated September 13, 1979, you requested our concurrence to increase the present surveillance period for the first year from monthly to quarterly for the HEPA filters for the engineered storage facility which contains the steam generator sections from the steam generator repair program.
A permanent surveillance program would be established based on a review of the first year of surveillance. data.
We agree with your conclusion that monthly replacement of the HEPA filters is too frequent.
Since we expect very little airborne activity to be present on the outside of the steam generators, and your data*indicgte that no detectable radioactive particulates are present, we concur that the relaxed replacement and radioactive analysis frequency is justified.
However, because of the possibility of the weather affecting the filters, we request that you perfonn a monthly visual inspection to assure that the integrity of the filters is maintained.
