e UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 October 24, 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR: Marold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuc1 ea,r Reactor Regula ti on FROM: James P. Murray Office of Executive Legal Director

SUBJECT:

JUNE ALLEN LETTER CONCERNlNG TRANSPORT OF SURRY STEAM GENERATOR PARTS- TO RICHLAND, WASHINGTON In a letter of September 11, 1979~ to Commissioner Bradford, June Allen requested that the Commission prepare an EIS and hold public hearings on the proposed transport of steam generator parts to Richland, Washington.

On October 15, 1979, the Secretary's Office referred Mrs. Allen's letter to the Staff for direct response.

We have drafted a reply to the letter for your signature which essentially refers Mrs. Allen to the Department of Energy, because it appears that DOE,and not NRC, will prepare any environmental assessment accompanying the proposed action.
