SUBJECT:

US-APWR DESIGN CERTIFICATION APPLICATION - SAFETY EVALUATION WITH NO OPEN ITEMS FOR TOPICAL REPORT MUAP-07001, REVISION 6, THE ADVANCED ACCUMULATOR By letter dated December 31, 2007, Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML08063A314, as supplemented by letters dated March 27, 2008 (ML080920634), and April 16, 2008 (ML081090182), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) submitted an application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a standard design certification of the United States - Advanced Pressurized Water Reactor (US-APWR),

pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 52, Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants. By letter dated January 26, 2007, MHI submitted for staff review the Topical Report MUAP-07001-P, Revision 6, The Advanced Accumulator, (ML070360068). Revision 5 to MUAP-07001-P was approved by a safety evaluation dated February 5, 2014. MHI submitted Revision 6 to MUAP-07001-P for staff review in January 2017.

Based on the review of the topical report, the staff is providing the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) its advanced Topical Report Safety Evaluation (TRSE) for Topical Report MUAP-07001-P. The advanced TRSE is being provided to support a meeting of the subcommittee of the ACRS scheduled for July 2018. The ACRS full committee meeting will be held after the subcommittee meeting.

A review of the advanced TRSE for any information exempt from public disclosure has not yet been performed. The NRC will withhold the advanced TRSE from public disclosure for 20 business days to allow MHI the opportunity to perform a proprietary and factual content review. Therefore, the staff requests that the ACRS withhold the advanced TRSE from public disclosure until it has been determined what information can be publicly released in ADAMS.

The advanced TRSE is available in ADAMS under accession number ML18131A214.

The staff will inform the ACRS immediately when MHI has finished its review.
