\\. l-UNAX No. 1.i:::i-JdJ CONAX CORPORATION .2300 Walden Ave. Buitalo, New York 14'225 ABSTRACT Environmental testing of Instrument Cable was conducted to qualify it* to requirements established by Virginia Elect.ric and Power Co. (VEPCO) for Surry Nuclear Power Generating Station, Units. 1 and 2.. The test (;!able was manufactured by Continental :Wire and Cable Corporation, Division of Anaconda and was removed from the Surry site after more than seven ( 7) yea-rs of service life. Testing was authorized by VEPCO_Purchase Order Number 6786~ (Conax W/0 7-69200). The test cable.was subjected to Thermal Aging and Radiation Exposure prior to being tested to simulated accident conditions. of Loss of Coolant (LOCA) and Main Steam Line Break (MSLB). This test program demonstrated the ability of the Instru-ment Cable to perform throughout abnormal service conditions after having been put into an accelerated end-of-life condition as s.pecified by VEPCO. ii

  • values were as follows:

Test sample 'l/3 circuit 1273..f\\.. Test sample #5 circuit - 884..rL .Test sample_ //6 circuit - 1289-"'- The resistance of.each fixed resistor was also measured and the valuEfs were as follows: Te$t sample #3.circuit - Test sample #5 circuit Test sample /16.circuit - 503.Jl-5 0 4..f"\\.- 504.J\\.- As shown in Figure 5.of the VEPGO Spe.cification, each of the test sample circuits included a 50-0..1'1. 2W 1% resistor and a variable resistor. Each of the variable resistors was adjusted to produce a 12. 5V drop across the 500-...l'I-resistor, and these voltages were stabilized prior to start of.the MSLB test. The. resistance of the cable conductors in test samp.le 115 was negligible ( less than O. 0 7.JL ') in relation to the combined resistance of the 500.n.. resistor and the variable resistor. The measurements at the conclusion of the MSLB test indicated that the resistance of the variable resistor in test sample

  1. 5 circuit decreased approximately JO%.

It* should be empha-sized that the setting of the resistor remained unchanged. * . It is, therefore, conclusively established that the increased current flow in test sample-115 circuit was directly caused by the resistaQCe decrease in the variable resistor used and in. no way was a result. o_f any change occurring in the test cable~ The LOCA Test and the MSLB Test were witnessed by R. Schaffer . of Virginia Electric and Power Company.*

8.0 CONCLUSION

Analysis of the results as shown on Data Sheet_s A through F demonstrates-conclusively that all cable test samples functioned as intended throughout all phases of this test 'program. Page 15

INTRODUCTION The. qualification Test Program described in the specification is to be (,.., __ / e* ( \\.,__,,* . 1conducted to determine. wht ther electrical instrumentation cables. I manufactured by the Continental Wire & Cable Corporation (now a division of Anaconda Co.) will function properly under environmental conditions

  • simulating those.expected within the containment of the Surry Power Stations Units No. 1 and No. 2 of the Virginia Electric and Power Company
  • during a postulated* loss of cooling accident (I.OCA) or during a main steam line break (MSLB).

The test program will include irradiation and additional aging of the cable samples which have been in service'at Surry for more than seven years, exposure of the cables to a combined steam and chemical spray while electrically energized and a comparison of the P,hysical properties.of the samples before and after* the environmental exposures. Separate tests will be conducted, one to simulate the LOCA conditions and a second test to simulate the MSLB environment. -- --*----- -- ---- - ---------- -*------* __, ___ --- ---,..~ - --- - - - - --* -*-*** ----*--* *~* ---

Dear. Mr. Davis:

At the outset of this test. program, it was. *mutually agreed that,. if we were not successful in* approximating the temperature rise time of the SLB Test as specified in_ Figure 3 of the above referenced specification, an~dditional test would be performed* by us. In performing* the SLB Test on November 14, 1978, 80 second*s

was required to attain the 350 °F temperature wi_th the.20 second rise time specified: by you. It was, therefore, agreed in*our telephone conversation of November 16, 1978 that a supplemental test designated as SLB 112 would be *performed* by us in a much* smaller test chamber where faster rise times can be* achieved.* The test conditions of SLB #2 are as defined below: J 1. Tes.t Items:. 1 p_c - Cable aged. and irradiated to 20 megarads 1 pc - Cable aged_ and irradiated to 20 kilorads 1 pc - Cable as re.cei ved f ram VEPGO 2 *.
